Liberal MLA Kent Hehr has proposed a motion that will be discussed in the Legislature on Monday, Nov. 26. The Motion reads:
“Be it resolved that the Legislative Assembly urge the Government to implement a policy to eliminate public funding to private schools.”
Alberta provides a little bit of money to independent schools in Alberta. (70% of the ‘instructional grant’, but nowhere near 70% of total funding – the actual percentage varies considerably and is difficult to calculate).
This funding ensures that middle and lower income families can send their children to independent schools, if they reflect the needs and values of the family in question.
The Liberal's proposal will hurt these families by making it harder for them to access the same range of choices that wealthy families have. We are opposed to this motion, and call on all MLAs to oppose it as well.
