A Catholic school in Ontario planned a field trip to campaign for Obama. This might be troubling to many Catholics, who see clear incongruities between the teachings of the Catholic Church and the policies of president Obama. Parents who send their children to Catholic schools have a right to expect that those schools are in fact Catholic. Those parents might be concerned by this sort of field trip.
Of course, if parents and the school community are clearly informed about what the intended purpose of this international field trip was, the school would have a stronger leg to stand on. This story is particularly concerning, given that the school principal told the public that they were going to ‘observe’ the election, while it is clear from internal documents that they were actually going to campaign on one side. The problem wasn’t just the trip itself, but what seems to be clear misrepresentation.
