Alberta Education Minister Talks Curriculum Changes

Speaking recently in Edson, Alberta's education minister Jeff Johnson suggested that curriculum needs to change and adapt with the times. His comments were covered in the Edson Leader, and you can read them here. The minister noted rapid changes in technology that have occurred since the original curriculum was developed, and the need for businesses to play a role in helping to identify the aspects of curriculum that are important for today's work force.
At PCE, we believe that the government should look at allowing choice in curricula - choice among a set of approved curricula for public schools that all meet the requisite standards but also offered some choice for schools and for parents. Engaging the community in the development of new courses and curricular options is a good idea, and those can be offered in addition to existing choices.
