An Alberta electrician is hired at eighteen, paid a rising fraction of a journeyman's wage, and trained on real buildings by a master who signs off on her competence. A teacher spends four years and up to $68,000 in student loans before meeting a classroom, and gets fourteen weeks of supervised practice in all that time. About thirty percent of early-career teachers leave within five years.

The University of Alberta already grants a journey certificate credit for half a Bachelor of Education. Alberta's Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act lets the Minister designate new trades. The U.S. Department of Labor designated teaching as an apprenticeable trade years ago. Until 1945 Alberta made teachers in a year at normal schools in Calgary, Camrose and Edmonton.

The ask

  • Designate teaching as a trade under the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act.
  • A five-year pilot in independent and charter schools under the existing Letter of Authority framework, with published results.
  • Pedagogy in summer blocks; general studies alongside paid classroom work.

Status: Proposal published May 2026. The province has since opened four expedited certificate pathways.
