PCE is not the only voice for education choice in Alberta. These are organizations and writers who work the same ground, mostly on social media, sometimes in print. They speak for themselves, not for PCE, and we do not always agree. We list them because the case for choice is stronger when parents can hear it made from more than one direction.

Who they are

Alberta Parents' Union

An organization of Alberta parents advocating for the best possible education for every student, in whatever setting a family chooses. Executive Director Jeff Park writes a steady stream of commentary on school boards, libraries, funding and the ATA. In 2026 the Union ran a 23-stop listening tour across the province.

Students First Alberta

A grassroots movement supporting education choice across Alberta, with a focus on independent and charter schools. Executive Director Kayla deRegt is a certified teacher and ATA member who also serves on independent school societies in Central Alberta, which gives her commentary on the strike and classroom complexity an unusual vantage point.

Alberta Conservative Teacher

A working teacher's view from inside the system, delivered mostly in short videos. Worth following for what the union's own members are saying when the union is not speaking for them. The same circle runs Time for Choice Alberta, a campaign to put voluntary union membership and dues to a province-wide vote.

Michael Wagner

Author and Western Standard columnist. Wagner writes the history nobody else bothers to: how Alberta's independent, Christian and home schools came to exist, who tried to shut them down, and why compulsory attendance laws deserve a second look.

Columns at the Western Standard

Cardus

A Hamilton-based think tank whose education program has done more careful work on independent schools than anyone in Canada. The Cardus Education Survey tracks how graduates of independent, Catholic and public schools turn out as adults; its 2024 report Exploring Alberta's Independent School Landscape is the standard reference on who attends Alberta's independent schools and why.

Aristotle Foundation for Public Policy

A Calgary-based think tank led by Mark Milke, co-author of the 2019 report on school choice that PCE helped commission. Publishes on education among its other files, with a bent toward evidence over slogans.

Occasional voices

The Fraser Institute, through its Barbara Mitchell Centre for Improvement in Education, publishes the enrolment and school-choice comparisons everyone else quotes, including the annual Where Our Students Are Educated and the cross-country Measuring Choice and Competition in Canadian Education. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation weighs in when the question is what the system costs and who pays.
